Mahasiddha Shavaripa was a great sinner and hunter who, through the grace of Avalokiteshvara - the Bodhisattva of compassion – renounced his cruel lifestyle and ultimately became a Mahasiddha saint. In this painting Mahasiddha Shavaripa is depicted in a mountainous terrain typical of the landscape in which he lived, along with his wife-assistant, who appears in the lower part of the painting.  On his back, Mahasiddha Shavaripa carries a quiver filled with arrows, and an antelope skin is slung over his shoulder.  He is naked but for a white cloth wrapped around his lower body and peacock feathers around his waist.  In the sky above Mahasiddha Shavaripa is the holy figure of Avalokiteshvara who showed him his evil ways and the path to spirituality.
